The presidency has finally reacted to the claim that the use of the Bimodal Voter Registration System (BVAS) in the 2023 elections will be halted. Femi Adesina, a presidential media aide, during a policy dialogue in Abuja on Tuesday, November 1, debunked the rumour and also refuted speculations that there is a plan to sack the national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Llp Mahmood Yakubu, The Cable reports. Adesina urged journalists not to give attention to such reports and those who propagate them with the intention of disrupting the 2023 elections. He said: “Recently, there was one group that said the chairman of INEC was going to be removed because maybe they didn’t want BVAS.”
“How many times has the president spoken about the role of technology in getting him into office? “He has spoken about it locally, internationally that three times he contested, three times he ended at the Supreme Court because the government of the day will just write results. “Then he said until technology came and there was permanent voter cards and so it was difficult to write results. The presidential media aide noted that the same people selling lies about the use of BVAS in 2023 are claiming that there is a plot to sack Mahmood. According to him, such things can never happen under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier debunked allegations of moves to sack its national chairman ahead of the 2023 general elections. INEC National Commissioner for information and Voters Education, Festus Okoye, debunked the allegations in an interview with Channels TV. Okoye stressed that the appointment and removal of the commission’s national chairman is not an easy task. He, however, admitted that the commission is under pressure to deliver free, fair and credible elections. Okoye said: “There’s pressure from Nigerians for the commission to conduct free, fair and credible elections. “The appointment and removal of the INEC Chairman is constitutionally inclined. The process and appointment of the Chairman is a very rigorous process. “The President makes a nomination which goes to the council of states, thereafter, it goes to the National Assembly for confirmation, before it comes back to the president who makes the appointment.” He further noted that the removal of an INEC chairman is also a very rigorous process. Okoye explained that there must be an allegation that must conform to the constitution’s provision. Thereafter, the allegation would be made to the president who will now approach the National Assembly to remove the chairman. “Section 25 of the Electoral Act makes the chairman of the commission the returning officer of the presidential election and section 25 makes the chairman the Chief Commissioner of the Federation. “So without the chairman of the commission, you cannot make a return for a presidential election,” he said.
